Introduction to Art, ART 1301
Virtual Exhibit Review Paper Assignment
Word file (DOC or DOCX) or PDF must be submitted in Canvas by Sunday 10/3 (11:59pm)
Please write a 500-750 word paper (roughly 2-3 pages) based on your experience visiting a virtual art museum or gallery. Google Art & Culture has compiled a large selection of examples (please note that this list includes all sorts of museums–for this assignment you must select an ART museum. Contact Dr. Fleming if you have questions about this). Please go to this site and explore the options: https://artsandculture.google.com/partner?hl=en&tab=pop (Links to an external site.)
Select one art museum or gallery to write about. Please be sure that you clearly state in your first paragraph which one you explored. You may also wish to explain how or why you selected the museum that you did. The focus of your review is an evaluation of the virtual museum or gallery experience, and after examining it in different aspects, your conclusion should present your view of this experience as positive, negative, or neutral.
Your paper should outline in detail what museum or gallery you visited, and what you experienced. Some questions to consider:
What did you see? Did you learn about the history of the actual museum? Did you view works of art from the museum’s permanent collection of art, or did you view a special exhibition? Please describe clearly what you saw and what aspects the site had to offer.Did you view still images or video, or both? Was there a “virtual reality” aspect or other special features available? How did the images create the experience? Did you in any way feel as if you were actually there?Did you have the opportunity to investigate individual works of art? Were you able to zoom in on images? Was there information about the artworks or the artist so that you could learn more? Did you “see” any works of art studied earlier in this course, or ones you already knew? What did you think about the overall experience? What did you learn? Would you describe the experience as positive, negative, or neutral? Would you encourage someone else to engage with a museum in the virtual sense (either the specific one you visited or another one)?Have you visited art museums or galleries in person (in the past)? If so, how does the virtual experience compare to that? If not, does the virtual experience make you want to visit one if you have the opportunity? Is there anything else that you consider relevant from your experience? Please describe.Papers should be 500 words minimum/750 words maximum, written in 12 point font with 1 inch margins. Papers must be written in MLA style. While this is not a research paper, and additional sources are not required, any quotations (used minimally) and direct references must be properly cited in footnotes. A sample paper written in MLA style, using footnotes, is available in Canvas. Start thinking now about your visit and plan to explore a few options before determining one to write about. Papers are due on Sunday 10/3, by 11:59pm and must be submitted electronically via the Assignment link in Canvas (the red box at the top of the page in the upper right corner). Please name your paper in this manner: Yourlastname_paper.doc. Papers are not accepted via email. Late papers will be subject to a grade penalty, and keep in mind that faculty must submit midterm grades by Friday 10/8–if your paper is not submitted in a timely fashion you may see a “zero” figured into your midterm grade.
